Seaweed as a model of sustainability

biofuels and not only that: the role of the seaweed in the world and above all in the sea, in our sea, is fundamental.
It is no coincidence, in fact, that even the European programs for the future come from this very precious vegetable.
Much of the goal of the leaders of the Old Continent for the use of renewable sources in transport is actually respected through i biofuels of agricultural origin.
However, many of the raw materials, such as maize and alfalfa, used to produce these biofuels they are not sustainable from an economic and environmental point of view.
Indeed, reducing pollution is not always synonymous with sustainability: relying on these raw materials would lead to more intensive use of resources, reduced biodiversity and even higher GHG emissions through land use change.

Seaweed and EU research

Based on these considerations - as we learn from the portal of the European Commission dedicated to scientific research with a view to environmental sustainability - scientists have searched the sea for concrete alternatives to fossil fuels.
One of these, the most representative, comes from microalgae, more commonly known as Seaweed.
While scientists have recognized the potential of seaweed as a sustainable source of biofuels, bringing production to industrial levels while maintaining environmental sustainability has also proved very complicated here.
In light of this issue, the scientists working on the MacroFuels project, funded by the EU, have tried to prove that seaweed can be sustainably produced and used as a source of biofuel.
After years of research, the project team developed a seaweed-based fuel that was recently tested in a test engine of a real car.
Powered by this biofuel, the car reached speeds of up to 80 km / h.

Cultivating seaweed for an eco-sustainable future

The cultivation of seaweed has several advantages.
This precious aquatic plant - as explained by the researchers - does not need, for example, fresh water, arable soil or fertilizers to grow.
This is a factor that it offers gigantic environmental benefits such as the elimination of emissions created by crop irrigation and deforestation, as well as the reduction of the demand for land resources.
The cultivation of seaweed can also help fight the problem of nutrient pollution: from the fertilizers used in agriculture, the excess nutrients end up in the sea.
