The Port of Ortona ready for a new leap towards sustainability

One thing is certain, even the Port of Ortona is concretely preparing for the ecological transition: a port that has always focused on intermodality, also pushing for important investments in this sense, will now be among the protagonists of the implementation of the cold ironing system, the electrification of the docks which will allow ships stopped at the port to turn off their engines and power themselves from land.
But which ships will this implementation involve and how will it be financed? Let's see it together ...
Electrified platforms to reduce emissions
Cold ironing on the Port of Ortona, formerly the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), will be carried out thanks to the funds of the National Plan for Complementary Investments of the NRP, with the aim of guaranteeing the concrete reduction of polluting emissions and, consequently, greater environmental sustainability also in port areas.
"In the areas", because Ortona will be only one of the Adriatic ports involved: with the signing of the implementing agreement with Sogesid, the "in house" company of the Ministries of Ecological Transition and Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, the ports of Ancona, Pescara, Pesaro and San Benedetto del Tronto, for what is classified as a truly exceptional intervention on the central Adriatic Sea.
The project has a total value of 11 million euros, and once completed it will allow ferries, passengers or service ships, provided they are of limited size, to be powered by means of electrification systems that will be placed near the docks.
A project aimed at the future
Five years for the realization of a truly ambitious and forward-looking project on which the President of the Port System Authority, Vincenzo Garofalo, also expressed himself in a convinced manner, visiting - among other things - in Ortona in recent weeks, as we reported in this article.
"With this collaboration we are proceeding along the necessary investment path to increase the sustainability of ADSP airports - Garofalo states - an objective that combines the growth of the maritime economy with the improvement of coexistence between these infrastructures and the communities ”.
Of the same opinion, Sogesid President Carmelo Gallo: "We are pleased to contribute to a process that is destined in the medium term to give new prerogatives of sustainable development to the airports of Abruzzo and Marche ”.
