Commercial potential limited by bureaucracy: task force of the companies of the Port of Ortona

Port flows in continuous growth that go in contrast with the inability to complete essential infrastructural works to ensure continuity in terms of development of the port of Ortona.

Companies are demanding that the completion of the port, and they do so by placing themselves at the center of the media agenda setting through a unanimous statement with the aim of soliciting the Abruzzo Region and all institutions to put the works in question at the top of the development projects of the regional economy.

“The lack of dredging of the Port and the full functionality of the NORTH and RIVA docks make the port inadequate for its full commercial vocation.

The shipping is getting bigger and bigger, the ever-growing port flows make it urgent to complete the infrastructures as it cannot accommodate two large ships at the same time, causing economic damage to the production system due to waiting at anchor.

The SFL Medway ship (180 mt ton draft with cargo of 10.000 mt 6,80 - at full load about 27.000) arrives near the port in conjunction with another large ship with priority at the landing on the New North Dock in what came before.

The same is forced to wait 6 days in the harbor waiting for the completion of the operations in progress to then be able to moor.

This wait will result in an increase in estimated costs of over 100 thousand euros for the company receiving the goods.

 

It is logical to think that the risk of such frequent delays leads to the choice of other stopovers by customers and owners. The inadequacy of the seabed and the scarce availability of docks that can be used by increasingly larger ships are limits that only the commitment of governance and regional policy can help to resolve and overcome.

In the light of all this, we strongly demand the immediate construction of the dredging at the new north quay but also the possibility of sheet piling and dredging the shore quay at 8,50 meters allowing the efficient use of about 1 km of quays. These interventions, which in other ports are of a maintenance nature, for our port have become an essential condition of survival for a port that has demonstrated exceptional operational capabilities for the purposes of traffic even in the pandemic period. In the first four months of 2021, 351.791 tons of goods were handled in the port of Ortona, up by 1% compared to the same period last year. The number of ships touched is also growing: from January to April 2021 there were 144 (+ 18%) of which 49 those of dry bulk ports, equal to + 22% compared to 2020 ″.
