Sustainable ports, the project that improves environmental sustainability, also involves the port of Ortona

It is a project born to improve the environmental sustainability in ports andenergy efficiency of maritime and multimodal transport. support-Sustainable ports is the main cooperation initiative of the Italy-Croatia European program in which 14 partners participated, including thePort system authority of the central Adriatic Sea. The lead partner was the Adsp of the eastern Adriatic sea, which is based in Trieste, where yesterday it presented the final results of the project.

Among the main actions of the Susport partnership, with a total budget of 7 million, there were the construction of photovoltaic systems or the co-financing of projects, the construction of electric charging stations, the renewal of the fleet of service vehicles with electric or hybrid vehicles, the preparation of investments related to the energy and ecological transition.

Sustainability runs on the Adriatic Sea

The Port System Authority of the central Adriatic Sea, with a budget of 600 euros, in addition to the actions shared by supportbetween 2022 and 2023, carried out the replacement of four traditional lighthouse towers with LED lighting in the commercial dock of the port of Ancona. An investment that today allows annual savings of around 44.800 kw, equal to a 44% reduction in electricity consumption. Two hybrid service cars have been purchased and pre-feasibility studies are underway on the use of alternative fuels and analyzes on the management of cold-ironing in the port system. Susport also co-financed the drafting of Deasp, the Energy and Environmental Planning Document of the Port System Authority, which outlines the actions to reduce the environmental impact of the system's ports.

A real opportunity to invest in sustainability

In port of Ortona, the Port System Authority coordinated with the Special Company of the Chieti-Pescara Chamber of Commerce which, for its pilot action, provided for the renovation of the port's lighting, thus increasing resources for the benefit of the port system.

“The Susport project represented a further opportunity to invest in sustainability, with which we are carrying out new environmental transformation actions of our port system – said the Adsp president Vincenzo Garofalo -. A constant path that we are realizing thanks both to the possibility of using specific European and national resources and to the collaboration of the Port Authorities and the maritime cluster. In fact, environmental sustainability is a need shared by everyone, maritime operators and local communities".
